4-12-2026 MY INSPO: swashbuckled

ahoy mates! there's a spring trend out in the sea. even though they say dead man tells no tales, i'll let you in on the scoop before it becomes viral.

pinterest trends have a board called swashbuckled, described this way:

raid your closet - piratecore is calling: stacking belts, quest-worn suede, and smudged "just-off-the-boat" makeup. style's gone off the map - arr you in?"
marine-life is a constant summer inspo for outfits. you have the traditional sailor looks with striped tops and chinos, mermaid vibes and "seapunk" of the 2010s, the ocean is a constant inspiration to the whole world. read this substack article by son of tibi founder amy smilovic - gabriel smilovic.

we may not have had a pirates of the caribbean reboot (yet) but many of us swooned over orlando bloom and were obsessed with keira knightley's snatched looks in the films. with festival season ahead of us, almost tangible, boho-adjacent fits are popping up on my feed, and i can bet you're seeing inspos too.
this pirate-core vibe is known for a distressed, mesh look, with a multitude of layers and materials. often found in renaissance faires too, this look is characterized by bandanas, smudgy makeup, belts and boots. boho with a sea-like edge.
here's a few looks off the runway and editorials that would be the hottest runway walks on the plank:
alexander mcqueen fw1996

harper's bazaar australia 2017

alexander mcqueen ss2026

chanel fw2006

the row ss2024
many of these looks are very modern, minimalist in ways, but have subtle pirate-y vibes: like a skirt layered loosely on pants (the row), corsets with an undone but edgy elegance (alexander mcqueen), romantic blouses meet knee high leather (chanel, harper's bazaar).
here's some items to loot if you're in need for the special something to shiver the haters' timbers:

i don't really have many pirate-inspired looks but i did make a merazine moodboard and a bratz pirate inspired look on indyx:

finally, if you're craving cocktails that will make you feel like jack sparrow, here's some rum-based treats for a weekend by the dock, from my two trusty cocktail books:

coco loco
4 oz pineapple juice
2 oz white rum
1 oz cream of coconut
1 oz milk
1/2 oz amaretto
1 tsp grenadine
1/2 cup ice cubes
pineapple slice

combine pineapple juice, rum, cream of coconut, milk, amaretto, grenadine and ice in blender; blend until smooth. serve in wine glass or hollowed-out coconut. garnish with pineapple slice.
mango-rum cocktail
3 tbsp rum
1 tbsp triple sec
3/4 cup chopped fresh mango cubes
1 1/2 tbsp fresh lime juice
2 teaspoons superfine sugar
1 cup ice cubes
1 lime wheel, for garnish

put the rum, triple sec, mangos, lime juice, and sugar in a blender and blend on low speed until smooth. add the ice cubes and blend on higher speed until very smooth. pout into large stemmed glass, garnish with the lime wheel, and serve.
