3-22-2026 MY FAVES: beatniks and good beats
what i'm reading...
after the pathetics of prince harry, i resorted to the french nihilistic literature, by reading michel huoellebecq's 'the elementary particles'.
the french love taboo, raw gross human carnality. they love controversy in art. think serge gainsbourg and "lemon incest" and whatever that father-daughter relationship was. or gaspar noé's films. granted - i know minimal about this topic, very rarely do i watch films like this (even though they're on my watchlist on letterboxd). french lit? i know a thing or two there. i've read my fair share of charles baudelaire, controversial french poet whom i discovered in high school, then camus, sartre and simone de beauvoir.
let's add huoellebecq into the mix. sib recently read sally rooney's 'intermezzo' and it seemed very similar to the description of 'the elementary particles'. two (half) brothers, one is a hedonist, always on the lookout for a fuck, and the other borderline autistic, perhaps asperger's, and a genius in some way.
my book was definitely saturated with a lot of sex, violence, topics of death and euthanasia, incest and new age hippies. i got into the book after getting day drunk and i felt miserable reading it. it was truly a sad and disgusting story, but one tied with philosophy about man and the (lack of?) importance of reproduction and sex in human evolution. the small novel is peppered with evolutionary fact, comparing man to beast, often giving us a break from the ultimate trauma dumping of these desperate men.
i hated the book, and i also loved it. be right back, putting my beret on, taking up smoking and going to the library to get some lars von trier and jean-luc godard films and speak about absurdist nihilistic philosophy.
a dip into nostalgia to cleanse my brain from the utter despair of human nature, as i read an old m magazine from march 2015. right before zayn left one direction - a true time capsule.

sib recommended i read when women ran fifth avenue: glamour and power of the dawn of american fashion - a great book on the start of department stores, women who saved the industry by giving women what they want. as someone who often roams around dillards and saks, just to window shop, the sense of luxury and curation is so intentional. with the recent news on our local saks fifth being one of the chosen stores closing upon this bankruptcy, this luxury will be gone. no more walking calmly looking at ready-to-wear items, fantasizing about where to wear them. goodbye to the museum of luxury for all of us women to behold.
what i'm watching...
don't know if it counts, but sib is still keeping me in the loop with gospodin savršeni (croatian bachelor).
one bachelor is doing a full vacation and historic tour around greece, using his time on the show as a way to be the ultimate tourist. reddit says he is making this reality more of a historical docuseries. next trip: greece according to petar.
we also watched the new jury duty spinoff - company retreat. the first 4 episodes came out this weekend, and we binged them too fast. this friday 2 more episodes are coming out. if you need a good laugh, this show is the best.what i'm listening to...
like the meteorite that flew above northeast ohio this week, here are some songs that gave me a pleasant sonic boom through my headphones:
dinner party - niall horan
can't stop the high - lady gaga
going back to cali - the notorious b.i.g.
ma tnsani (yalla habibi) - vanco, aya
symphony no. 5 in c minor - ludwig van beethoven
i want to share with everyone a song that cannot be found on streaming platforms but regularly gets played at home. lady gaga - fashion (no exclamation mark). this song was featured in the movie confessions of a shopaholic and i had it on my mp3 player. this is the hymn of fashion and it's a hugh disgrace to only be able to listen to it on youtube.
i also got into some cool funk mashups by the artist touch of funk. here are some songs i enjoyed the most.
knockout minute!
my neck, my bad girls
pie like this
cake in the moonlight
finally, here's some songs boyfriend recommends:
can i get a... - jay-z, amil, ja rule
u don't know - jay-z
quest for love - potatohead people
unwritten - natasha bedingfield
into the groove - madonna
