6-15-2025 MY FAVES: juneteenth faves and poolside jams

 music of the week

in honor of juneteenth coming up, here are 5 recent faves by black artists:
every girl (wants my guy) - aretha franklin
vous etes seuls, mais je desire etre avec vous - nina simone
you go to my head (henry green remix) - billie holiday
that beat - quavius
family affair - sly & the family stone (rest in peace!)

music apps really seem to be some of my faves. beside airbuds, radiooooo and my classic spotify (over)use, might i suggest a new app on my radar?
this app is called poolsuite fm - an aesthetically pleasing music app playing mostly beachy house music fit for various summer moments, categorized in "channels" such as balearic sundown, friday night heat, hangover club, and more. you can also listen to curated mixtapes by dj's from all over the world. finally the app itself channels retro vibes, with options of visuals from the 80s vhs tapes reminiscing of baywatch. guess what i'm going to be listening to during pool days paired with my cocktails?

in the spirit of summer, i was getting ready for our garage sale over the weekend, and during preparations i craved listening to surf music. then between hawaii vibes and shredding guitars, i remembered a childhood song, stuck deep in my chldhood memory, which came out after a puff or two of a joint. our mom used to sing a song about hawaii (no one in my family has ever even been close to it - the closest experience is lilo and stitch). the past week i was stuck on searching for lyrics i might have still remembered from 20 years ago? and i was itching to ask my mom, half-worried she may not remember any of this. but she did and she remembered a bit of the lyrics which helped my search immensely. the song is these islands by danny couch. the first melodies literally sent me back to childhood and this mystery was resolved. unfortunately this version isn't on spotify but there are some good covers which i enjoy now.

movies of the week

somewhere between boyfriend coming over to make dinner, post festival hangouts, and garage sale prepping, we found ourselves watching the osbournes on tubi. step aside kardashians, this family was it. bizarre and dysfunctional, it checks all the y2k requirements. i got really into it, that i even spent days listening to ozzy and black sabbath. i'm thinking about doing a sharon and ozzy couples costumes, but with a gender bend twist.

books of the week

i'm down to my last 100 pages of the great tales of horror. i am honestly so ready to finish this book.
