5-11-2025 MY INSPO: the met and the mothers

 on the met gala

the first monday in may came and went, and left impeccable new looks for everyone's moodboard and wonderfully tailored ideas. this year, smart suits dominated the blue carpet for this year's theme of superfine: tailoring black style, and luckily there wasn't worrying appropriation and costumification of the black dandyism culture. here are some of my personal faves of the most important night in fashion. this would've been an ideal night to hear andré leon talley's commentary.

style icon: my mom

in honor of mother's day, i decided to compile some fave looks by none other than my favorite vintage clothing supplier and occasional stylist: my mother. i also chose a few of her simple looks, and analyzed how i can truly be a mother's daughter and copy-paste her style genes.

here's an early 2000s photo of my mom and i, both posing, for christmastime. this could possibly be mom's new years, or christmas eve mass look. this dress is by a brand called scott mcclintock. it's currently in sib's closet.
our mom has an iconic evening dress collection, and we've been lucky ourselves while thrifting, to find pieces alike some of her's. between the two generations, our future daughters will never have to worry about proms, weddings, and any other black tie event.

mother's fashionable response to covid. during a facetime call she whipped out, and modeled her newest mask - a croatian flag one.

like mother, like daughter. my mom with my cousin, both suited up in the 90s. this pink skirt suit set was one i dreamed of owning since i was a child. here i am, decades later, interpreting the baby pink look a bit differently, for easter
2021.

step aside, martha and ina. mom for her birthday at work, showing off her gardening gifts. i inherited sensitive skin and sun intolerance from my mom, so both of us are obliged to rock some cute hats, more for the sake of uv protection rather than fashion accessory. still, we can agree she's doing both pretty well here.
a rare selfie sighting. every once in a while, sib and i will get a surprising selfie in our family group chat, and it's our mom showing off a latest look. here's a very unusually dark look from our mom. you can usually spot her braving some bright colors and patterns, but here she's wearing a dark purple sleeveless sweater with a long sleeve black shirt underneath, and a black skirt. how mysterious!

finally, let's revisit mom's looks through the lenses of my own closet. baby boomer vs gen z style analysis.

we're starting off pretty bold. here's a fancy fit pic from a day at mom's work. she's wearing a leopard print sweater and a pleated skirt with some high heel boots and tights.
i would take this croft and barrow leopard shirt, american eagle mini skirt, and these thermal calzedonia tights. the boots are from express.

the following photos do not have shoes in there so i am interpreting what would work from my own personal perspective.
here's a photo sib or i might've taken so mom can show off this prada purse she got as a gift from my aunt in australia, probably alongside this bold printed dress.
to match the color palette, i would style this ralph lauren halter dress, and kind of tone it down with my doc marten loafers. i do not own a prada purse, so instead i'd wear this second-hand shoulder bag.

mom bodychecking?! possibly going to a fancy event such as a christening or wedding, my mom is wearing a violet dress and her jewelry.
i'd wear this satiny purple bebe dress, add some jewelry and wear these suede d'orsay heels. the heel itself is gold.

keeping it simple. here's mom's fancy birthday cake and a simple tee shirt moment. i would wear the t shirt i painted on, rebecca minkoff dark wash jeans, and we could be playful and pair these platform steve madden boots to the fit.
