1-18-2026 MY FAVES: why do good girls love bad boys
books of the week
i continue my belle du seigneur journey.
here's my commentary on the male characters that are part of the league of nations (predecessor of today's united nations):
the incompetence of these men, who hold the question of diplomatic recognition, the final say in potential genocide, rights and fights for countries in need, is evident by how the questions are described with carelessness and considered an annoying chore. these important questions and tasks that could impact a whole nation's global recognition end up being forgotten by these sloths of high society. they're rich white dudes who could care less, because it's their own little circle of pathetic "society", their own "creme de la creme" that matters most to them.
look at the un today: the legacy of the league of nations. let's put aside the fictional characters and their "quirks", what are these men doing regarding the questions of genocide and national recognition around us, almost 100 years later?
movies of the week
here's an important part of croatian pop culture and history: the most iconic soap opera spanning 7 years (2004-2011) and over 500 episodes: zabranjena ljubav (transl: forbidden love), can be found on youtube, i doubt there's any subtitles though.
sib and i revisit every so often but usually don't get much past season 1. if you're in the mood for a good watch and crazy plot twists, and you're just as passionate about croatian pop culture as we are, check it out!
i can't give out spoilers, while reading about it i discovered an important piece of information that basically spoils the whole series. i think i remember girls in 5th grade talking about the plot twist like our american peers discussing who -A is, or gossip girl's identity.
to continue our throwback vibes in this household, sib and i watched 3 metros sobre el cielo (three steps above heaven). this spanish teen drama had us teen girls in a chokehold.
let me introduce you to mario casas - spanish heartthrob all of us were crazy about.
i've seen this movie once when i was 12/13, at a friend's birthday party. as a teenager, this movie was like an ideal wattpad story and we all wanted our own bad boy hache.
watching this at 27, though, this movie is so written and directed by a man, romantacizing violence and fight clubs, and poor teen girls getting so head over heels for horrible manchildren with no real consequences.
sib was frustrated as she has never seen it before, and honestly i had a blast.
the movie can be found also on youtube, and it was such a crucial film for the balkans because most subtitles are in croatian or serbian.
what is it about bad boys and semi toxic but thrilling relationships? there's a parallel storyline in belle du seigneur that is incredibly similar to 3msc that i could almost guarantee the screenwriter may have read this book at some point?!
either way, if you watch this movie and see nothing wrong with the characters, consider that your sign to seek a therapist. or perhaps, you're 12. i forgive you then. don't be dumb tho - let fiction be just that - fiction!
i introduced boyfriend to the importance of american gigolo and we watched this fashionable thriller. boyfriend's comment "the poor guy was groomed. if this was filmed today, someone would say something". he did agree that richard gere did amazing, and the plot was fantastic. how much will it take for boyfriend to start getting a collection of suits like him?!
this is the third womanizer media content i've consumed just this week. and out of all the guys (solal from the book, hache, and now julian kay) - kay was the most likeable one.
another bratz moment this week - we watched bratz passion for fashion diamondz (reminiscing on the cloe doll we had from this line). the plot is wild: plainsville ohio, a country girl thief, simon cowell byron powell in drag, and diamond go-go boots. users on letterboxd agreed: neither david lynch, nor david fincher, could've come up with such a masterpiece.
music of the week
as a former european citizen, it was almost mandatory to watch eurovision yearly and cuss out the judges and their rigged votes.
croatia followed italy's sanremo music festival and has its annual dora music festival. the winner is guaranteed to compete in eurovision.
we used to watch dora as kids, now we find the playlist of competitors and rate our faves, in hopes they will be sent to represent.
granted - each year we want to boycott eurovision because of its hypocritical agenda and extreme political correctness to the point of bootlicking.
while i made a playlist of dora 2026 songs. my ranking is top=faves and so on. sib and i had lots of differing opinions.
a brief note on the history of dora: the festival is named after a female composer dora pejačević - a noblewoman who excelled in the musical realms and was part of the croatian national institute for music. she passed away shortly after giving birth to her only child and wrote a chillingly romantic letter to her husband 4 months before, which seemed like a premonition of her death. dora's greatest inspo came from traditional croatian music - embedded in the romanticism style.
croatia has a plethora of historical female icons. for such a patriarchal and tiny country, our ladies were, and still are, truly out of this world. they are yet to receive their flowers though. in schools we were taught about them in passing, while the men still got full hour lessons...
if you're in the mood for some classical music discovery, i recommend adding her to your chillaxation playlist.
and in other news, here's this week's 5 saved songs:
palm springs drive - giorgio moroder (for the soundtrack from american gigolo)
lush life - zara larsson
punk rocky - a$ap rocky
stateside - pinkpantheress & zara larsson
andromeda - lelek (my dora competition fave)
