6-15-2025 MY INSPO: in honor of juneteenth

this upcoming week we're celebrating juneteenth - and in this political climate, we have to remember the fight for our rights - ending slavery, civil rights, women's rights, and how they didn't come peacefully. they sure as hell weren't achieved by an insta "informative" aesthetic posts. nevertheless, i struggle to stay silent. i was woke before we even had that label. insufferable? probably? but i stay true to myself.

with all this being said, even though i dog on posts like "hello kitty says to abolish ice" in pink bubbly fonts, here i am, on my little fashionista blog - and i want to share 6 black icons of this day and age in honor of juneteenth.

we cannot deny the rock star status of the talented tina turner. her bob mackie looks, as presented here, are just as iconic as cher. tina's bravery to escape domestic violence is inspiring, and her songs are my childhood faves.

rock star number 2? the androgynous and mysterious grace jones who pushed the gender norms back in the day. her role in vamp was an interesting one... and her feature in beyoncé's renaissance album was fantastic. just a great addition to one of my favorite albums ever

speaking of beyoncé, we can not deny her icon status alongside britney and madonna! an r'n'b princess turned cowgirl: cowboy carter is not my fave album but still - i love her take on country and i will defend it forever. because if someone like post malone can do it what on earth makes queen bee less worthy? bow down bitches.

a groundbreaking icon - crystal labeija - a trans drag queen who founded the house of labeija in 1977. it was the start of ball culture in nyc and she helped homeless lgbtqa+ youth. she was one of the few black drag queens awarded a queen of the ball title at a primarily white drag ball. she defied the racism found in the lgbtqa+ circles at the time and would host balls just for black queens.

the rock and roll god title should and only could be awarded to jimi hendrix - his national anthem performance at woodstock will forever give me chills. his incredible talent was lost too early. clapton who?

finally - childish gambino or donald glover (or anything else?). love his songs, and i loved him so much in the series community which because boyfriend and mine's comfort show (let's tina turn-our clocks back!).
