3-9-2025: MY FAVES: march mayhem

 music of the week

i've been at many music related events lately. it was a good week to discover artists, music enthusiasts, and more events.
i discovered marie & the restaurant, a local band that was performing on thursday at the bar coda. they have two songs out on spotify(always and find your peace), and the folksy style is refreshing and simply beautiful.
amy winehouse is on repeat at home and in the car too, in honor of watching her documentary. she was so unique, and style was for sure something new in the 2000s. sib and i agreed she was the only singer that mastered cursive singing, and made it rich because of her strong vocals (all shade to whisper singing).
when we were at a local dive bar saturday night, it happened to be another random vinyl night. an older gentleman, a vinyl collector, was spinning. when we got there the repertoire was very industrial 90s punk (i caught add by the viagra boys  and liked it). i can appreciate some heavy punk but for a birthday party the crew agreed it's a bit heavy and niche. the gentleman was super nice to take our input and also educate us about names to look out for, including imelda may, linda ronstadt,  a classic he added in his mix, and amyl and the sniffers who seem to be everywhere lately.
sabrina carpenter was this month's vogue cover star, so i listened to her whole discography. not to be "i was here before she was famous", but her songs sue me, paris and diamonds are forever were on repeat when i used to work at the mall and they're still bops.
it's mayhem march and we finally got lady gaga's new album. lady gaga is always on my spotify wrapped and this just secured her spot this year. it is a no skip album, and her visuals and looks remind me of her early fame monster and born this way edginess, while a lot of her songs carry the edm vibes we later see in artpop and chromatica. it's an album that has disco and darkness.

movies of the week

at work we watched the luck of the irish from disney. it was positively cringey.

sib and i watched amy, the a24 documentary about amy winehouse. it is such a tragic story that was inevitable to be sad. amy's geniusness lives on. her witty lyrics and powerful vocals is a wonderful legacy to keep. unfortunately she was surrounded by too many wrong people that had a bigger impact on her than the ones who meant well. had she survived, she may have been put in a conservatorship (the similarities between britney's father and amy's are scary).

books of the week

march vogue was read, and now i am officially starting svjedok pokojnih, the crime book i got from croatia.
