we continue an unintentional exploration of campiness through film, this time by watching the movie the gay deceivers. it’s a movie from the 70s about two young men trying to avoid getting drafted in the vietnam war by acting gay and moving in together. this movie uses questionable language, like the f slur, and i’m not sure how well it would do if it was made in this day and age. the movie has an iconic scene that made numbers back during the tumblr days:
“you dirty bitch! look what you’ve done to my peonies!”“they’re marigolds!”“good god! i think she’s right! they are marigolds!”“i may not know my flowers, but i know a bitch when i see one!”
the movie overall was somewhat entertaining but also very homophobic. the interior design and costumes were absolutely vintage gold! i know that pistachio metallic fridge would work well even today.
interestingly, michael greer, the actor that deceived the earlier line, was an openly gay actor. he worked with the screenwriter to ensure the openly gay characters were not completely viewed in negative light. was this movie ahead of its time in some ways? highlighting the struggles and bigotry of the time for being homosexual? i mean, the ones that had the most perfect relationship were michael greer’s character malcolm and husband (aka lover, aka better half) craig (played by sebastian brook). one thing for sure is that malcolm was a sublime interior designer, excellent party host and fabulous landlord.
“i detest cheap notoriety!”
“well, so do i! but wasn’t that punch divine?”
we also watched party girl starring parker posey. this movie was heaven for a fashion nerd like me, because i too would like to look cunty in a library and i wish i had a master's in library science too?! the looks were so good and i feel like i'll be earing more colorful tights thanks to mary, the main character. sib and i were gushing over her lofty apartment and the party set ups. it was such a chic and cute movie, with a soundtrack that sends you back to the last days of disco. next night out when i see the baba chef truck in lakewood, i'll be ordering falafel with hot sauce, a side of baba ganoush and a seltzer.
finally, we watched sugar hill, a blaxploitation movie from the 70s starring marki bey, who was incredibly gorgeous. this movie was super campy too, and a great suggestion for halloween. diana "sugar" hill summons dead zombies that were once slaves to kill, one by one, a gang that killed her beau. the voodoo rituals in the movie were super cool and the makeup for the zombies was... something. sugar's jumpsuits were super 70s sexy. the n-word being thrown out there was a sign of the times. without more spoilers, i'll just say that justice is served - in a cunty witchy way.
