movies of the week
celebrating 100 years of art deco appropriately, watched lady windermere's fan (1925) a silent film based on the novel by oscar wilde. sib and i watched it at the museum, as they had a silent film festival. it was accompanied with a quintet of various instruments. what a phenomenal experience, the music brought out more emotions than dialogue needed to!
the true 1920s fashion was so mesmerizing, slouchy but freeing silhouettes, and incredibly dramatic makeup - small red lips, eyebrows as lines, and incredible eye makeup making the characters' eyes pop. i loved it all.
boyfriend and i focused on how the 70s did the 20s. we watched the 1974 great gatsby starring robert redford and mia farrow. hazy and sultrier than the bad luhrmann version, but still just as glamorous. robert redford was phenomenal, the scenery was beautiful, as well were the outfits - daisy's crystal look for her first party at gatsby's?! rewatching or re-reading this work, i understand why this was such an important and signature art deco work - gatsby themed parties never get old - just make sure your soundtrack includes the charleston.
