2-16-2025 MY INSPO: when sport meets fashion

a vogue article and the superbowl inspired me to talk about when sports met fashion...

i am not at all sporty. the only sport i did was dance (if you consider that sport) in middle school. that was fashionable. we didn't have uniforms (gotta love the low budget) so instead we had a dress code and just hope we are all cohesive. i remember wearing a pink floral skirt for one performance, and another memory seared into my brain was a barbie girl performance where i agreed to be the ken. button down shirt which i borrowed from my crush at the time and jeans, while the girls around me were as barbiefied as they could be.

sport is super important where i come from though. croatia is impressive and amazing in sports: handball, waterpolo, and of course soccer - those are just many divisions we excel. let's talk about the croatian soccer jersey. you can recognize it by the bright red and white checkers, a detail taken from our country's coat of arms. it's so recognizable, now imagine all of us fans in red and white cheering on. could we, from a distance, also look like a checker board?

the vogue article by maya singer reports:

but as cultures, as worlds, the runway and the stadium kept their distance, with rare exceptions [...] proving the rule. now the stadium is the runway: the "tunnel fit", the pregame looks athletes wear ambling from team bus to locker room, has turned nfl and nba players into tastemakers, with stylists pulling items straight from paris shows...

i don't care about football at all, but i was definitely in attendance, watching the game and more importantly, the half time show. drama aside, serena williams making a cameo during the halftime show, wearing a cute tennis skirt and crop. if we're in the same tiktok and pinterest universe, we cannot forget the impact tennis core had on us this spring and summer (thank you challengers for your impact too). i felt this one on a personal level, since my 2025 vision board was sprinkled with tennis and golf inspo for spring and summer. for winter, i'm always a sucker for après ski looks (i have never skiied in a day of my life - but i'd love to try!). i want to look good and feel good, by training and trying these sports and looking chic while doing it. i hate uniforms, but the sense of individuality and the opportunity to make something my own is exciting. "if you want to be cynical, you could say that the fashion industry is glomming on to sports, and its stars, because that's the last means of communicating to a wide audience. designers see [angel] reese [wnba], they see dollar signs, they see [gabby] thomas [track and field], they see dollar signs. sure. but isn't the cynical explanation also the pollyanna one? why wouldn't the fashion industry want to be in business with people who represent the values of hard work and authenticity? who give us, at a moment when many of us find this rather difficult, something to believe in?"

i guess i can add onto kendrick's look even though he isn't in sports, but he did perform at a sport event. all performance i was peering into the tv to figure out what his varsity jacket spelled. boyfriend and i agreed it looked really cool. also - are his jeans celine or american eagle? bootcut or flared? has anyone cracked the mysteries of these jeans?

let's not forget that our beloved converse were "born for the court" because chuck taylor, a semi-professional basketball player, requested more comfortable shoes for games: "within a year of taylor's arrival, the company had adopted his ideas for improvements to the shoe's design to enhance its flexibility and ankle support. the restyled shoe also incorporated a distinctive all-star logo on the circular patch that protected the ankle. after taylor's signature was added to the ankle patch as his endorsement, they became known as chuck taylor all stars, the first celebrity-endorsed athletic shoe".

you can be a vessel, you can be a shield; you can make armor. you empower them. that's what fashion can do for sport. yoon ahn (designer for ambush)
