4-27-2025 MY WEEK: international eating, constructive criticism, and art events around

Image
i come to you with another recap of my week, and a list of my fits. i've got boxes of leftovers this week - i was very international with my food and dinner choices. i made a korean bbq bowl with rice, then went to get mexican at a local restaurant, following day enjoyed an all-american cleveland wrap and a long island, then enjoyed mediterranean mezze, belgian waffles, and a chinese buffet.  one day boyfriend brought a huge pile of clothes he wanted to try on and "model" for me, which i thoroughly enjoyed, but now this pile is still in my room. bestie victoria and i went to the museum of art on saturday. she wanted to try out her newest gadget, a vintage camera with black and white film. i was interested in the fine print fair happening this weekend. after tinkering with the camera for a few minutes, we were ready for this adventure. i genuinely thought i could find some affordable prints for the house, but i was brought back to reality once i saw the 4 digit prices on...

4-27-2025 MY FAVES: food, drugs, and video games

books of the week i completed my reading of medium raw.  my takeaway? the all american hamburger died some time ago. what would anthony bourdain think about the millennial burger joint meme circulating?  i want to try a tasting menu one day in this lifetime, as well as to visit a michelin rated restaurant.  my new read is unmask alice  by rick emerson . i read the book go ask alice  when i was in 4th grade, and it left a mark on my impressionable preteen brain. this book, however, uncovers the truth and backstory on how this controversial book/diary was actually a total scam, and how it boosted the drug panic and satanic panic (as the "anonymous author" also wrote a similar diary about a teenage satanist). i am so excited to dive into this investigative piece. 15 years later, let's uncover the truth about alice.

4-27-2025 MY INSPO : does god dream of chrome?

Image
it's been a hectic week for us catholics with easter festivities and the symbolic passing of pope francis has got us all reflecting on our faith and religion. bestie nicole and i were just praising the pope on easter sunday, then once again faith was brought to the table during bestie victoria and mine lunch at one of our fave spots, zhug .  i am not going to go in depth on my personal view on religion, but i will say, pope francis left a legacy and impact on many, including me. and to focus on the topic of fashion, what an interesting concept that his holiness worked with the met and conde nast in 2018 to create one the most iconic met galas in the recent years: heavenly bodies: fashion and the catholic imagination . the catholic church had it's fashion and pop culture moment. to this day these looks are recycled onto moodboards (including mine very often). this collaboration seems contradicting though. the met gala being gluttonous, boisterous event for the elite, with hea...

4-20-2025 MY WEEK: recession indicators and spoiled mothers

Image
i want to be forever 21 do you remember your first forever 21 purchase? i got my first yellow bag from my aunt the summer of 2014 after i was begging for a skater skirt. american apparel everywhere digitally, but in reality i lamented alongside 5sos, "so close but so far away..." yet forever 21, quick in following trends, came in handy. not just with a plain black skirt but also with flower crowns, and boho crop tops i ordered from my aunt when she would ask what i'd like from the usa.  while i am a big supporter of the thrift and slow fashion, forever 21 was my saving grace upon moving and needing clothes. it continued to be a savior for nights out when sib felt like "she had nothing in her closet".  i haven't been to my local (basically half-empty) mall since last year (successfully avoiding it during the holidays), and i almost forgot that the forever 21 company filed for bankruptcy, until we went shopping for my mom (this lady has orders when we come a...

4-20-2025 MY INSPO: neotribalism - from festivals to tattoos

Image
while sib was heavily dodging the coachella influencer fits and performances, i have to claim of being a victim of the festival culture (mind you the only music festival i ever attended is vlajternativa  when i'm in town).  the first time i heard of coachella was in 2011-12 when one direction imagines  (aka pov's). i had to do a deep dive on what coachella meant, while reading imagine, you and harry at coachella (with an appropriate chevron outfit crafted in polyvore)  and the fans start to recognize him ... coachella definitely did something to my brain, and i mimicked the fashion of festival culture, including tribal prints (called aztec prints at the time?), flower crowns, studs and everything 2010 boho chic. growing up with boomer parents, i had vast knowledge of woodstock, alongside with the belief that i was born in the wrong century. so coachella brought me comfort that i too can be in a very hot and uncomfortable crowded place, waiting longer for t...

4-20-2025 MY FAVES: airbuds and beli - my fave apps

Image
music of the week i discovered the app  airbuds  recently. it reminds me of the time spotify had the social feature where you can see what friends are listening to in real time. not sure if this is weird, but i like seeing what others listen to. i'm always itching to discover new music, and who best to find inspiration from than from your friends? it's cute and simple.

4-13-2025 MY FAVES: growing record collections and a peak into the kitchens

Image
music of the week record store day was on saturday and i was eager to get a hold of more vinyls for my collection. while i was at the thrift earlier in the week, i discovered a ton of old jugoton  vinyls, which is a famous record company of the yugo days. most of these were just opera and orchestra hits, but still, i am never able to fly back home out fear of warping vinyls so i'll take what i can get here. i lucked out at record den and got an lcd soundsystem   vinyl called x ray eyez  including the original mix and a trash can dub. getting sleazy this week... some discoveries of the week are bands from cro like žen  and chui . žen was caught in a controversy for simply being a lesbian shoegaze band, that was supposed to perform at a children's cultural festival in the home of ivana brlić-mažuranić - the most famous children's author in croatian history. we've heard this story over and over, of parents supposedly freaking out about what ideology is a que...

4-13-2025 MY WEEK: a note on homeownership and gender roles

Image
i hope you girls put your records on, now tell me your favorite song! yesterday was national record store day . aside from homeowner growing pains (a new washer gets installed because the old one broke, then you discover another leak in the bathroom and can't use it, what a classic!) and running around laundromats and other errands, sib and i took some time between the errands to stop at the local record den. sib and i are big believers in thrifting older records. sib states that "buying brand new ones just doesn't feel natural". i agree, the natural wear and tear, the obscurity of old records, the... patina? just adds a certain charm. nevertheless, new or old, we were supporting local rather than purchasing new records at target, barnes and noble, or an urban outfitters. now i decided to celebrate early by taking a look at the record selection at the thrift, and i'll share my findings in my faves of the week . to say a word about homeownership, sib and i have b...

4-13-25 MY INSPO: who's your (dead) daddy?

Image
if you're on the same side of the internet as myself, you are not a stranger to the many posts lamenting the death of an robin williams , jim morrison , kurt cobain , and other men that were icons turned legends posthumously. i once read someone describing that each girl in her twenties ends up choosing her own emotional support dead man, and one learns their lore until all resources are exhausted (many times these sources are limited because they are in fact - dead). sib, for example, could share some deep dirt on david bowie or some other 70s rockstar with shady history. in my teens, vincent van gogh was pivotal to me, i would watch the doctor who episode featuring van gogh just to get into my emotions and mourn the couple hundred old artist who would've been long dead even prior to my birth. i read his letters to his brother faster than my mandatory school readings. i made the art hoe aesthetic my bitch. the reason why i'm bringing this topic up is because i am readi...

4-6-25: MY INSPO: the american pastime

Image
during our girls night out last week, there was a trend coming back full swing - agreed upon our group. both victoria's shared with us their new favorite accessories, an american classic: the baseball cap .  i am a huge supporter of head accessories - mainly because i cannot braid my hair, and my hair is incredibly straight and stays that way. so i enjoy sprucing up the fits with something other than my usual. not only is this super sporty chic, the baseball cap is a sun protector as well, and there have been many summers in the mediterranean where my highly pale self was forced to wear these so my scalp and face don't burn. mark maidment, senior vp of the brand new era , stated " it's the people's crown. it's completely egalitarian ". while i've had many a cap perched on my head throughout the years, in my current closet i only own 2 - one is boyfriend's high school one, with the mascot, and another is a tie dye one also  from boyfriend, that on...

4-6-25 MY FAVES: indigenous artists

Image
music of the week there's a really cool music discovery app called  radiooooo , which i discovered, thanks to buzzfeed , years ago. i believe it was the summer before my senior year that i listened to it pretty constantly. i redownloaded it recently, and i am pretty saddened to see how many features are unavailable if you're not a premium subscription member (subscriptions are the cancer of our society in my opinion). still, you can enjoy shuffle mode and some islands (themed playlists). this spring, my plan is to discover some new songs through this app, so i'll be reporting back soon with some gems.  at the mix  i discovered a new local dj - dj red-i,  as well as an indigenous dj   shub . shub's songs are much more dubstep and ravey, but his visuals at the mix were mesmerizing. dj red-i is also part of a duo called freshproduce. some songs that i saved while listening to their work on spotify: move like that - dj red-i gold pieces - freshproduce. m...
