8-31-2025 MY FAVES: waiting for the train

Image
books of the week i am officially halfway with tajna krvavog mosta  and there has been multiple deaths (many of them still alleged) and i could not even fathom who is suspicious. i got a really annoying email the other day, of vogue proudly  announcing a subscription needed for the runway app . now, this app is essential for any fashion nerd - especially in may and september, during the fashion month peak. i've canceled my subscription recently (been disappointed with ai ads, uninspiring covers, and stories of billionaire wives who may inherit conde nast in general), but the runway app is something i enjoy checking still. the perk of it was that it was free and you didn't have to have a vogue subsription to use it. i use it to check the newest shows, and dig through old runway archives. this feature hidden behind a paywall is heartbreaking for the fashion enthusiasts. the libby app  has a magazine subscription for free with your library card, and each library...

8-31-2025 MY INSPO: the space age retrofuturistic aesthetic

Image
last week's entrance i described some vintage stores from columbus, in particular boomerang vintage, with groovy midcentury and googie  retro-futuristic design. i am a huge fan of the aesthetic of this era: chrome tinsel for christmas trees, fridges and kitchen appliances with colorful hues, saturated posters hoping for a space age tomorrow. the retrofuturistic   space age  aesthetic is one i wanted to do a deep dive. this aesthetic is shiny and colorful. i associate jello and martinis with this era, and lots of benzoides.  speaking of such, a lot of tumultuous things were happening in the political and social time, that one could try and ignore through colorful pills, and colorful gadgets. the world was coming out of a nasty war, a woman's place was firmly in that fancy kitchen, and those picket white fences did not allow any person of color.  it's interesting how we talk about trends return, and some of the political trends are trying so hard to come back. mid...

8-31-2025 MY WEEK: season is coming to a close

Image
the final hues of summer got sib and i in a confused mood. it feels like spring, summer and fall at once, in true ohio fashion. we still feel guilty about looking forward to fall, but officially - labor day is here, sib's birthday is around the corner, and the layers are coming out from the back of the closets, as you can see, they showed up quite a lot in this week's fits. i went with my work besties to a  guardians  baseball game, and indulged in cheesy fries, diet pepsi and ice cream.  sib and i are exploring geocaching for our afternoon walks. treasures will be reported soon, hopefully. the  geauga county fair , is this weekend. we had some wonderful weather on saturday, and got our corn dog fix. the corn dogs are no longer endangered. sib and i learned about traditional rug hooking , and the ladies have a guild (which is active during work hours), but sib and i might look into videos, sourcing some linen, and utilizing some old strips of unused clothes t...

8-24-2025 MY FAVES: damsels playing distressed

Image
books of the week this week in my solo book club, i'm still engulfed in  tajna krvavog  mosta . i have such an urge to visit the croatian capital, zagreb , because most of the book is set there, in actual neighborhoods of it. my plan is to do a zagorka  tour next time i visit. the book is huge, and i'll be sharing more bits about it. so far, we're trying to solve a murder mystery, and possibly one of the first mentions of cross-dressing and drag in croatian literature. how hasn't hollywood, or at least the creators of downton abbey or bridgeton get their hands on this series?  movies of the week so far, just reruns of mentalist  for sib and i as the evenings get cooler.  we watched  rosaline (2022) , a hulu-produced period rom-cam depicting romeo and juliet, from cousins rosaline's point of view.  the film had strong  bridgerton  influence mostly in music, and race-bending characters. i was positively surprised by the freshness of...

8-24-2025 MY INSPO: what peaked my interest this week

Image
put it on i recently bought some puma palermos  at our local ross - dress for less store. this store has become our holy grail for shoes. they always get interesting heels and their doc marten selection is  irresistible, always 50% off. to justify buying new sneakers, i convinced myself it was for my salsa classes. i disliked the feeling of chunky sneakers for dance. it didn't feel as good as something more "down to earth". and the color stuck with me for a full week - bright coral with neon soles. i wouldn't have needed convincing in middle school when neon was all the craze. sib reassured me, her being obsessed with sneakers forever and always. her theory goes: "you don't have to care about fashion, or you could have a very niche style. tomboy, goth, fashionista, or someone that simply doesn't care. if you have a good shoe game, you are instantly stylish." sib believes that a shoe makes the look. she follows the words of carrie bradshaw  closely....

8-24-2025 MY WEEK: is she a rainbow, or does she paint it, black?

Image
the start of the school year literally wiped away the heat of summer, so suddenly. summer arrives loudly, brightly and feels obnoxious sometimes. but it leaves and never gives you notice. truthfully, we still have a whole month of technical summer time, but this week i admit i'm liking the feeling of fall.  fall is my favorite season, but i feel so guilty at the beginning of it (or at the end of summer), because here in ohio we only get a sliver of true summer. or perhaps i was spoiled by my youth in dalmatia, where we had mostly summer and painful heat. boyfriend let me borrow his macbook, so it's been a bit easier instead of bouncing between library work hours, my own schedule, and sib's laptop with no storage. thank you boyfriend! on monday i dyed my hair back to copper, and had a proper therapy sesh with bestie morg, my hair stylist and wonderful friend. did i accidentally dye away the last blonde remnants of summer as well? oops.  friday i had an end of summer team...
